Client: Bangalore Development Authority
Between 2013 and 2017 I was part of the consultant team preparing the Revised Master Plan for Bengaluru 2031.
Bengaluru (also known as Bangalore) is a metropolitan city, the capital city of Karnataka and one of the fastest growing cities of India. It is even known as the ‘Silicon Valley of India’ for spearheading the growth of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) based industries in the country. The growth of IT and industries in other sectors (e.g. textiles, light engineering and defence) and the onset of economic liberalisation since the early 1990s has led to in-migration and rapid growth of the city.
The Local Planning Area (LPA) of Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) spreads over an area of about 1219.50 Sq Km (area under LPA of BDA as per RMP-2015) with a population of ~85 Lakh as per Census 2011. The LPA of BDA comprises of the major part of the erstwhile municipal corporation of Greater Bangalore, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and 251 villages in the periphery of BBMP. BDA was entrusted with the responsibility of preparing and revising the Master Plan as a Planning Authority for the Local Planning Area of BDA under the Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act, 1961, and the winning bid for the project went to consultant team Royal HaskoningDHV and ADAPT.
As an employee of Royal HaskoningDHV and a member of the team, I assisted with every aspect of the project, including initial surveys on ground of land use, housing, transportation, water, solid waste management, and organising meetings with the general public to as part of the legally mandated stakeholder consultation process to discuss with citizens their key issues and priorities.
Sadly, the Draft Revised Master Plan for Bengaluru 2031 that we prepared was withdrawn by the BDA in 2020, owing to several legal issues outside of the two consultants’ control. The plan our team made for the city are, however, archived and still available at https://data.opencity.in/dataset/bda-revised-master-plan-2031.
